Best Motorcycling Tours in India
There is nothing quite like motorcycling. I’m sure most Indians would agree with me about this. Every day, more and more motorcycling enthusiasts are pulling on their helmets and gloves and going on life-altering road trips.
For these enthusiasts, it’s not only about the adventure. It is also about getting away from the hectic pace of daily life, the rat race as it were. One of my colleagues had worked for our company for a year without taking a single break – not even a weekly off! The strain was so obvious on his face that it made us worry for him.
Eventually, he decided to take a month off and go on a motorcycle tour to Himachal Pradesh with his friend. He was gone the entire month and when he came back the difference was remarkable. He was reinvigorated, energized and ready to get back to work. The photographs of the trip that he showed us were equally mind-blowing.
If you have a bike and love motorcycling along endless roads, India’s the country for you. From beaches to mountains to deserts to forests, it has everything your motorcycling heart could possibly desire.
Take a look at the most popular motorcycle tours in India.
Ladakh
This tour is number one on everyone’s wish list and with good reason. It allows you to experience Khardung La, one of the highest motorable roads in the world, beautiful mountain passes, Buddhist culture that will amaze you with its depth and a rarefied atmosphere amongst many other things. You have a choice of destinations ranging from Khardung La to high altitude lakes such as Pangong Tso to Nubra Valley’s sand dunes to Zanskar Valley. The best time to go is between April and August but the high altitudes mean that you need to be careful about acute mountain sickness.

Vazhachal Forest
Many enthusiasts consider this tour the best one for the monsoon season. The route connects Chalakudy, Kerala and Pollachi, Tamil Nadu. You get to experience a variety of forests in just one road trip – tropical rainforests, evergreen forests and even cloud forests. In fact, it rains so much here that the rivers are more or less full constantly meaning that you can see some spectacular waterfalls on your way. The fact that you have two forest reserves in this region – Anaimalai Tiger Reserve and Vazhachal Forest Reserve – means plenty of wildlife sightings too. The best part is that you can do this tour at any time of the year. Just watch out for the Tigers – not kidding.

Thar Desert
If you want a truly exotic experience, this is the tour for you. Riding along the road that winds through the Thar Desert truly gives you the feeling that the desert is keeping on coming at you. You have everything here – nature in one of its rawest forms in the sand dunes and eons of history in the forts that dot the countryside. You also ride through countryside that is very sparsely populated – ironic considering our status as the world’s second most populous country. The best time to go is between October and February – unless you like getting baked (no, trust me, you don’t). If you do decide to go riding in the dunes, remember that you’ll spend most of your time pushing your bike through them rather than riding it.

Kolli Hills
This one is not for amateurs and first-timers (please don’t let your ego guide you on this one). This is meant for motorcycling veterans who have plenty of experience navigating mountain and hill roads. Not for nothing are these hills called the mountains of death. The route is in the Limca Book of World Records for having, count them, 70 hairpin bends. Negotiating this route will give you spectacular views of the Agaya Gangai waterfall. You can also visit pineapple farms and the old Shiva temple. You can go motorcycling here at any time of the year but be very careful; the roads are small and accidents are frequent.
