Chug On - Oktoberfest In Chandigarh Is Happening!
Little did I know that apart from dealing in some really serious business, Germany is known for its famous “Beer Festival- the Oktoberfest”. Although Germans have quite a lot (well) occupied the car domain and same with the leather products, they have invented the largest beer festival which is celebrated and welcomed most of the time.
And why not… When you are getting to drink not just pints but giant stein of beer (Gala time for beer lovers….)
But what is this Oktoberfest? Why misspelled October? And why it’s a festival? You need to know all this.
What Is Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest is a traditional German Fall festival which was celebrated in honor of the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. For five full days, the burghers of Munich were invited to eat, drink and be merry, and enjoy parades involving kettle drums and music, shooting displays and a horse race around a meadow on the edge of town. Such a good time was had by all that it was decided to stage the race (and the accompanying indulgences) every year.
Why the letter “K” instead of “C” in Oktoberfest
The ones who have learned German would in an instant answer this. But the ones like me who don’t even know the a,b,c,d,e….of the language do get curious as to are we mis-spelling or what. Here’s the answer. The month “October” is spelled “Oktober” in German. So simple isn’t it… (even I was surprised that’s it?) And that’s right. Also, there is no capital “F” because the event title is all one word.
Why it’s a festival
Ironically, Oktoberfest never meant beer indulgence. It was a dry fest and mostly synonym to a celebration for poor to enjoy the wedding of the Prince and Princess. It started off with the royal horse races which were then replaced by the beer vendors.
Soon the beer acclaimed fame as it was the pure Munich beer in large one-litre glasses or famously known as Masskrugs which in turn are the sovereigns Oktoberfest Beer Mugs…(People try to sneak them out since where do you get such beautiful glasses) Today around 6 million people throng Munich and celebrate the biggest Folk Festival.
