Movie Review: Krazzy Tabbar
Helmed by director Ajay Chandok, Krazzy Tabbar doesn't seem to have much of an impact when viewed on paper. We've seen the rom-com's, the hardships faced by two lovers, the ambiguity they face over the continuum of their failing relationship and the loud and brash families that just don't get along, and all they do is make matters worse for two star-crossed lovers. Yet, the film came as an unexpected and welcome surprise when we saw it in theaters. Sure, the premise of the film and the ideas it revolves around have been done before. But to this perfection? I doubt.
As the name suggests, this movie deals with some crazy folks. The plot is set in a small village, where a family is headed by a man whose career has been riddled with police complaints and FIRs lodged against him. Oddly enough, he seems to pride himself for the vast array of cases held on his head. A brother-in-law who drinks all day long, a wife who craves every opportunity to speak her heart out and a son who seems to be following in the footsteps of a far from ideal role model that is his father. Elevating the craziness is the fact that the boy is in love with this girl (aren't they always) who comes from a family completely opposite to his own. So are the writers able to deftly portray the clashes between the two inherently different cultures on set? Or does the chemistry fizzle out due to the lack of a common link between the two dysfunctional families? To answer the question, Krazzy Tabbar manages to pull off the former with much expertise.
What we need to get straight that this film is an all-out comedy, but it's also so much more. Yes, I went to the theater expecting two halves of hilarity and perhaps a tinge of masala. That's where the movie won me over. It delivered on what my expectations were, and it rose above them by giving me scenes filled with emotions, the true feelings shared between families. Like many films, it doesn't overdo the tears or the mushy-mushy moments that just make you want to cringe. It balances everything on one platter, and suddenly, laughter isn't the only feeling you're experiencing during the course of the film. The bonding between the in-laws and the couple to be is the best part of what otherwise seemed to me a simple and heartfelt comedy.
Like I said, the plot when seen on paper is close to nothing. Writers Nihal Purba and Manduip Singh probably knew about this when they'd started scripting the dialogues and were filling in each character description. Maybe that's why they incorporated enough sub-plots in order to keep you engaged in what would have otherwise been a cliched film. Apart from interesting plots and unique character-descriptions, much of Krazzy Tabbar's strength is based on its acting prowess. There are witty one liners that make you go "Ah... I'd never thought of that," which would have fallen flat if appropriate actors were not chosen to portray the role. Thankfully, the film averted cinematic disaster by roping in an absolutely brilliant cast, with the likes of Harish Verma and Priyanka Mehta in lead roles, followed by an ensemble of Nirmal Rishi, Yograj Singh, B.N Sharma and Jaswinder Bhalla who manage to deliver top-notch performances.
The film is spearheaded by an empowering performance delivered by Yograj Singh, who despite playing a supporting role manages to win the audiences over. Showcasing vulnerability, anger, love, and pride for his family, this stalwart provides a power-packed performance that steers the audience through its run time. The rest of the cast manages to do a decent job, along with director Chandok narrating the plot in what is being deemed an interesting take on the same old love story.
Does the film have any faulty edges other than it following an old storyline? Yes. The pace of the film begins to lag in the first half, picked up mainly by Yograj Singh a while later. Also, the dialogue delivery of the supporting cast at times seems to be misguided, heading into no man's land and lacking any sort of punch.
Do we recommend it? YES! It's a family drama which has a foray of emotions that will have you laughing, grabbing a tissue, gasping for air after listening to some hilarious pieces, empathizing with the two families and feeling a sense of newfound love for your near and dear ones.
Movie Rating: 3/5
In short, Krazzy Tabbar is an entertainer with its heart in the right place. Go for it.
