Shopping in Kolkata is always fun and exciting. Being a shopaholic, street shopping used to be my favorite pastime during evenings, while my stay in Kolkata. Kolkata is known for its street shopping and is famous since years. People from every walk of life love to shop from the streets of Kolkata. For street shopping, all you need to have is good bargaining skills and a few bucks in the pocket.

Here are the top five famous places for Street Shopping in Kolkata. 

New Market

Established in the year 1875, it is the oldest market in Kolkata. It is one of the most famous places to shop in Kolkata. New Market has more than 2000 stalls. It has a variety of stalls stretching from jewelry to footwear; everything is available here and that too at a very reasonable price.

How to Reach: New Market is situated in Esplanade, which is very well connected with metro and local buses. If you are traveling by metro, you need to board metro till Esplanade metro station, New Market is just situated outside the metro station.

Gariahat

It is the most famous shopping hub in South Kolkata. This place is always crowded throughout the year. Everything, from bags to sarees to bed sheets are easily available here. All you need to do is just walk along the footpath of Gariahat.

How to Reach: Easiest way to reach Gariahat if you are traveling from North Kolkata is through metro. You need to travel till Kaligath Metro station and board an auto rickshaw for Gariahat which is easily available outside the metro station.

BarraBazaar

This place is situated very close to MG Road. This market covers the large portion of the area. Many small vendors are found selling different varieties of products like clothes, footwear, accessories, utensils, stationery, etc. This is one of the famous wholesale markets in North Kolkata.

How to Reach: All you need to do is board a metro till Mahatma Gandhi metro station. Rickshaws are easily available for BarraBazar if you are not willing to walk, otherwise, you can just enjoy shopping while walking down the streets of BarraBazaar.


Hatti Bagan

It is the oldest street market in North Kolkata. You can get a variety of products at a very low price. This market is popular because of its special weekend marker; here all kinds of pets like fish, dogs, birds, etc are made available for purchase and is sold on Sundays. Apart from this, the market is also famous for ladies fashionable wear, and other products related to home decor.

How to Reach: Hatti bagan can be easily reached by metro, for which you need to board a metro till Shyam Bazar. Tram or Yellow Taxis can also be used for traveling.

College Street

This market is best for bibliophiles. This place is also known as a book junction, from where you can buy both new and old books at a very low price. You can even sell/exchange your used books. Being situated very close to Calcutta University, this place has always been one of the crowded places in Kolkata.

How to Reach: College Street is situated in the Central Kolkata. The best way to reach this place is via Tram or local bus.
