Taimur's name has become controversial on Twitter!
In just an hour after Mommie Kareena Kapoor Khan and Daddy Saif Ali Khan revealed their baby boy's name "Taimur Ali Khan Pataudi" on 20 December 2016, #TaimurAliKhanPataudi was one of the top trends on Twitter, with the self-appointed social media critics trolling the name. The world has been busy posting raging tweets, arguing and debating on Twitter whether the couple was right to name their son after a tyrant and criticizing the couple. Cummon Tweeps, What's in a name?? Taimur is just a name, which means iron in Arabic. But no, many believe that Taimur, known as Tamerlane in the West, is believed to have spearheaded a brutal massacre of Indians during his conquests. But what else do we know about the 14th Century conqueror?
Timur, historically known as Tamerlane is considered the last of the great nomadic conquerors. He was a born on April 8, 1336, in Transoxiana near the city of Kesh now known as Uzbekistan, but most sources from his lifetime give ages that are consistent with a birthdate in the late 1320s. He was a Turco-Mongol conqueror and the first ruler of the Timurid dynasty. He was also the founder of the Timurid Empire in Persia and Central Asia after certain conquests. He emerged as the most powerful ruler in the Muslim world after defeating and conquering land land that comprises modern day countries including Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Armenia, Mesopotamia, large parts of Syria, Turkey and Central Asia along with also sacking Delhi, leaving a trail of destruction and poverty in his wake. To legitimize his conquests, he referred to himself as the 'Sword of Islam'.
But despite his exploits on the battlefield and his reputation for endless barbarity, Timur has been officially recognized as a national hero in Uzbekistan. He is regarded as a military genius and a brilliant tactician with an uncanny ability to maintain the following of nomads during his rule. He was always characterized as an opportunist. He was also considered extraordinarily intelligent – not only intuitively but also intellectually. He was a skilled general who established himself as the last great nomadic king in the line of Chengis Khan, and apparently a mathematician, too.
